A look into

Los Angeles & it's creative culture

Whether watching TV, Netflix, surfing the internet, or even reading a magazine, the media's obsession with the entertainment industry is undeniable. Whether you care or not, it is almost impossible to avoid the release of Beyonces new visual album, the Kardashians annual Christmas card photo and the "Best and Worst Dressed" celebrities at just about every awards show.

For many, this type of story  provides gratification to the senses. Following the lives of celebrity actors, musicians, reality stars and other variatiions of "artistry" is appealing in the same way that all entertainment is.

So what is entertainment and why are humans so drawn to it? Let's start off with a basic definition:

Entertainment -

noun

  1. the action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment.

  2. An event, performance, or activity designed to entertain others.

synonyms: amusement, pleasure, leisure, recreation, relaxation, fun, enjoyment, interest, diversion - (Courtesy of Google)

Despite what others think, entertainment, in its many diverse forms, is what makes the world go round. I mean just look at the synonyms... diversion and relation? It is one of those few and major outlets that allow us to escape the realities and the stressors in our world - with the ability  for an extended period of time to have the capability to get lost in someone else's or something's reality. Whether experiencing it alone or in a group, it goes without saying that entertainment has the power of bringing people together in an environment of pure enjoyment, with all societal differences swept aside.

The big question then becomes who is creating the entertainment? My basic answer is anyone that has the desire and the passion. Everyday, all over the world people of all walks of life are creating and entertaining their friends, family, and peers. However, when we look at this question critically, we often associate an entertainer with the "celebrity" that is prominent on TV, online, and in the news. While this may be amusing, most of the time, all we are seeing is the "glamorous" side of these actors, musicians and artists lives once they have MADE IT.

The purpose of this piece is not to look at what we already know but instead diverge backwards into the root of it all: where the raw passion lies. The passion that may very well be there, but that is often jaded by the glitz and glamour of the rich and famous...

This piece shines a spotlight on those creative individuals who seek a not so glamorous but passionate life. Hundreds of thousands of actors, musicians an artists come to Los Angeles, "the city of dreams" with their passion in their pocket, stars in their eyes and a determination that is vaster than the Wilshire Boulevard stretch. What is special about these individuals is that they are not drawn to the money and fame, but instead savor the pure satisfaction they have in entertaining and bringing enjoyment to others and to themselves, in their performance that defines their passion.

In further exploration of this site you will find history, personal narratives of both struggle and success, and most importantly an understanding of the creative mind - why passion wins... no matter how challenging or competitive the journey may be.
